Safety‑First CBT Supports for Domestic Violence Survivors

If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services. For confidential help and safety planning, contact local domestic violence hotlines or shelters. This page is educational only. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Stabilization and support

  • Prioritize safety planning with trained advocates and clinicians.
  • Use grounding, paced breathing, and brief routines to manage acute stress.
  • Document needs and connect with social/legal resources as appropriate.

CBT‑informed skills

  • Identify triggers and early warning signs; plan supportive responses.
  • Gently challenge global beliefs (“I’m powerless”) and note exceptions.
  • Reconnect with values and supportive community where safe.

Journaling prompts (safety‑aware)

  1. Grounding I used today and its effect (minutes, intensity).
  2. One value I honored safely, and who supported me.
  3. Resources to contact this week (advocate, counselor, support group).

Only journal in safe, private contexts; see How to Journal.
