CBT for Health Anxiety / Somatic Symptom

Educational content only. Always follow medical advice for new or concerning symptoms. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

Health anxiety (also called illness anxiety) and somatic symptom presentations involve heightened worry about health, frequent body checking, and reassurance seeking. Short‑term relief from checking fuels the longer‑term cycle.

Why CBT helps

  • Uncertainty tolerance: practicing “letting questions be unanswered” reduces compulsive checking.
  • Response prevention: delaying Internet searches and reassurance prevents reinforcement.
  • Values‑based actions: redirecting attention to meaningful activities shrinks symptom focus.

Journaling prompts

  1. Trigger → urge to check → chosen delay (minutes) → outcome.
  2. Evidence for/against the belief “This sensation means serious illness.”
  3. One values‑aligned action I did instead of reassurance seeking was…

Use thought records in How to Journal.

When to seek care

Work with a clinician to coordinate medical evaluation and CBT so that appropriate reassurance is given while reducing compulsive patterns.
