CBT for Hoarding Disorder

Educational content only. Safety and housing concerns warrant professional support and community resources. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

Hoarding involves persistent difficulty discarding possessions, perceived need to save items, and clutter that compromises spaces. Emotional attachment and decision difficulty maintain the cycle.

Why CBT helps

  • Sorting skills: categorize (keep, maybe, discard) with clear criteria.
  • Exposure to discarding: practice tolerating distress while letting go.
  • Values‑guided decisions: align spaces with how you want to live.

Journaling prompts

  1. Area targeted today → items processed → percent cleared.
  2. Beliefs about discarding I tested and what I learned.
  3. How the cleared space supports a valued activity.

Use brief logs alongside How to Journal.

Selected readings

  • Frost, R. & Steketee, G. Buried in Treasures (self‑help) and clinician guides.
  • Community‑based models for hoarding intervention and safety planning.

When to seek care

Severe clutter, safety hazards, or eviction risk require multidisciplinary help (clinical, social, housing).
