Gut‑Directed CBT for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Educational content only. IBS requires medical evaluation and care coordination (dietary, medical). See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

IBS symptoms are influenced by the gut‑brain axis, stress reactivity, attention to sensations, and avoidance of triggers that limit life.

Why CBT helps

  • Attention retraining: broaden focus away from gut sensations.
  • Stress skills: paced breathing, cognitive reappraisal, scheduling recovery time.
  • Values‑based exposure: gradually reintroduce activities avoided due to symptom fear.

Journaling prompts

  1. Situation → symptom intensity (0–100) → coping skill → outcome.
  2. Activity I reintroduced and what I learned about control vs. coping.
  3. One thought about symptoms I balanced today.

Use alongside your treatment plan; see How to Journal.

When to seek care

New or worsening GI symptoms require medical assessment. Coordinate CBT with medical/dietary guidance.
