CBT for Postpartum Depression/Perinatal Anxiety

Educational content only. Seek perinatal‑informed care for screening, safety, and coordinated support. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

Perinatal periods bring biological, psychological, and social changes. Mood symptoms can be maintained by sleep disruption, loss of routines, and high standards for caregiving.

Why CBT helps

  • Gentle activation: brief, nourishing activities that fit within caregiving demands.
  • Flexible standards: balance safety and responsiveness with self‑compassion.
  • Support planning: identify helpers, resources, and rest opportunities.

Journaling prompts

  1. One small act of care for me and/or the baby I completed today was…
  2. Which helpful/unhelpful thought showed up? A kinder alternative is…
  3. Who is on my support list this week and how can I ask?

Use brief, flexible entries; see How to Journal.

Selected readings

  • Perinatal mental health CBT resources and stepped‑care models.
  • Guidelines from perinatal psychiatry associations on screening/treatment.

When to seek care

Emerging thoughts of self‑harm or harm to baby require urgent evaluation. Combined approaches (therapy, medication, social support) are common and effective.
