CBT for Premenstrual Symptoms (PMS) Coping

Educational content only. Discuss options with a clinician as needed. See our Medical Disclaimer.

Overview

PMS may include mood and physical symptoms pre‑menses. Anticipatory anxiety and self‑criticism can increase distress.

Why CBT helps

  • Cycle tracking: plan supports for high‑symptom days.
  • Cognitive strategies: balance perfectionism/self‑criticism with compassion.
  • Routines: sleep, nutrition, and gentle activity planning.

Journaling prompts

  1. Cycle day / symptom severity (0–100) / plan for today.
  2. Balanced thought that counters “I should push through everything.”
  3. One support I requested and how it helped.

Use short entries; see How to Journal.

When to seek care

Marked impairment or severe mood symptoms warrant medical evaluation; PMDD has specific criteria and treatments.
